Back Pain and Stress
Back pain occurs commonly where you are under stress. Stress means emotional stress too, not just physical stresses such as lifting, bending or carrying. But if you are like most you will notice that when you get stressed and rundown your back starts to hurt and pain develops.
If you can understand why this occurs then you can follow some simple steps to help avoid stress causing back pain in the future. Of course you should still make sure your spine is balanced and functioning well or this will only give you temporary relief.

Why Does Stress Cause Back Pain?
When you get stressed a few things occur. Physiologically your Adrenal glands will start to become active. These are small glands that sit on top of your kidney. They deal with the fright flight mechanisms along with other functions such as anti-inflammatory delivery.
If stress starts to become severe or prolonged your Adrenals will tire, they will still protect you but the anti-inflammatory products will decline. Therefore small physical stresses are not coped with and hence back pain can develop.
The second mechanism in stress is muscle tension. When stress occurs we tense up our muscles as a reflex action. Mostly this occurs in the upper back or neck. However, once again with prolonged stress these muscles as they tighten will allow spinal imbalances to develop.
As these imbalances occur the entire spine is affected and back pain can occur throughout the spine, not just locally to your neck and shoulder area.
How Can You Stop Back Pain From Stress?
The easy answer is stop being stressed, but for all that is plainly impossible in today's hectic world. However you can protect yourself, boost your Adrenals and help dissipate the stresses that do occur.
The following is some simple things you can do to help stop stress causing your back pain.
1. Go For A Walk - walking helps to keep joints and muscles relaxed and it is also a great way to distress. Simply go for a good long walk, look up at an angle of thirty degrees which accesses your natural anti-stress areas of your brain, and relax.
2. Eat More Salt - the Adrenals need salt to function well. In fact you need 1/4 teaspoon for every liter of water you drink for the Adrenals to function correctly. So if you have removed salt out of your diet and you feel stress is a factor, add some more in. Remember it is excessive salt that affects your cardiovascular system; 1/4 teaspoon will have no effect at all.
3. Take A Break - taking a day off, a few minutes out of the day or anything to change your routines will also help reduce stress. It is the small things you do regularly that make the biggest changes.
4. Hydrate - joints and muscles need water to function well, as does your brain. Your brain is the first area to dehydrate. So if your water levels are low, stress occurs easier as will back pain. So try to drink at least a liter of water every day, more when you are stressed also.
These simple tips can make big changes to your back pain if you do them regularly. Stress is a common cause of back pain but it is only part of the cause. If you have been under stress and changes to your spinal balances have occurred you still need to address these to have long term back pain relief.
So reduce stress but also make sure you address ALL the causes of your back pain too.
