Bowen Therapy
Is the Bowen Technique the Ideal Back Pain Therapy?
Bowen therapy is a gentle and non-invasive form of body work. Although it is gentle it is still a very effective form of therapy used in many
back pain
issues.
The Bowen Technique targets key areas to stimulate energy flow, but Bowen Technique involves a gentle, rolling motion, with very light touches. The practitioner will stimulate sets of points, often with pauses between sets. The Bowen Technique is not a form of
massage therapy
, though it does claim to release areas of built-up stress in the muscles, and clients can experience a profound relaxation after a session.
How does Bowen Therapy Work?
Simply stated the Bowen Technique resets the body to heal itself. The work consists of a series of gently rolling connective tissue moves, using a light touch and may be done through clothing. There are frequent important pauses between these moves, which give the body time to benefit from each set.
By combining moves, both placement and in location, the practitioner is able to address the body as a whole or target a specific problem.
A unique tool of the practitioner is 'tissue tension sense' , meaning the practitioner is able to discern stress build-up in muscle groups and then utilise the Bowen technique moves to release that stress.
The Bowen Technique balances and stimulates energy flows, resulting in a deep sense of overall relaxation. The restorative process begins once the body is relaxed, and continues as the body allows. Healing seems to occur by affecting the body's autonomic nervous system, which creates balance at a cellular level.
The therapy is gentle, completely safe and non-invasive.
However, using any manipulative procedure within 24 hours of Bowen may undermine of the effectiveness of the treatment.
The average Bowen technique session typically lasts an hour, however the effects of the treatment continues to work for up to ten days. Because increased oxygen production and its circulatory movement are central to Bowen Therapy, the applications are numerous. No one is too young or old to receive the Bowen technique benefits and a wide range of symptoms experience positive effects within 1-3 treatments given 5-7 days apart.
What are the Disadvantages of Bowen Therapy?
As with all therapies, the drawbacks are limited to the practitioner and the style of practice. Bowen technique is a fantastic technique that works incredibly well. I have personally experienced it and found it beneficial.
However…
Any therapy that relies on the practitioner is limited. You are not able to treat your
self at home
, although certain practitioners will show you some techniques to aid recovery. As always, if the Bowen therapy practitioner passes the
