These micro-injuries create tension in your muscles and joints ... as the tension increases, the muscles pull on your spine causing various distortion patterns (spinal imbalances). This causes your spine to lose both strength and flexibility as the spinal imbalances continue to develop with time until ... one day you bend over to lift your child, push in a chair, or perform some other 'normal' daily task ... and pain suddenly arrives.

It is these imbalances that cause your pain, as your spine cannot support normal function.

Even disc injuries are commonly reported as occurring for no apparent reason. If the compression stresses on your spine from these imbalances increase enough, even disc bulges, herniations and ruptures can develop... all starting from these small daily stresses placed on your muscles and joints.

These same imbalances can increase pressure on your spine and then lead to the early signs of degeneration ... even though you may notice no pain at all.

Again the cause is not that final act, but the many imbalances in your muscles and joints that have happened with time.

How Do These Imbalances Develop?

There are two types of imbalances that occur - muscular and joint. More on joint imbalances soon ...

Muscular imbalances develop as muscles tire from being overworked.

Each day you spend time working and overworking your muscles ... from gardening, playing sport, household chores or even just prolonged poor postures ... again these micro-injuries accumulate over time.

As muscles tire, they react by tightening ... this is a normal physiological reaction. The muscle tightness increases with time and twists and distorts your spine leading to these imbalances.

But it is not just tight muscles that create these imbalances...

Weak muscles also attribute to these imbalances. Why?

Muscles work like a see-saw ... one muscle pulls while another muscles pushes (relaxes) ... if not movement of joints will not occur.

An imbalance can occur from one muscle being tight and pulling you out of balance ... or a muscle being weak and allowing the same reaction to occur.

However, weak muscles do not just relate to physical strength ... the weakness relates to the integrity of the nerve and blood supply to the muscles AND the physical strength.

If the supply is poor, the muscle will weaken over time. This is why simply stretching or exercising has poor success at achieving long lasting relief.

As I said, there are two types of imbalances...

The major joint imbalance occurs in your pelvis. The joints of the pelvis have no discs, hence no cushioning support. As the muscular imbalances pull the pelvis out of balance, the joints become 'sticky'.

This means the movement stops being a smooth, flowing movement. The pelvis therefore twists and distorts to compensate, which further increases the muscular imbalances.

Stretching and exercising does not change the nature of the movement or the joint imbalance ... correcting these requires the use of more specific techniques designed to get joints moving freely and in balance.

This is why it is common for people to stretch for months to ease pain, only to find that once your forget to stretch or decide to stop stretching ... pain returns quickly.

To get long term relief you must target both the muscular and joint imbalances...

Finding The Underlying Cause Of Back Pain

There are four main distortion patterns that occur - knowing which pattern you have gives you the first step in long lasting back pain relief.

The only VITAL step in back pain relief is finding the cause!

The four patterns are:

Anterior Tilted Pelvis (ATP)

This is where your pelvis tilts forward at a greater angle.

The lumbar spine curve increases (sway back) and can cause compression in the lower spine.

This is detected by looking at your body from the side - a normal pelvic angle is approximately 30 degrees. An excessive angle increase (40 degrees) will indicate an ATP.


Posterior Tilted Pelvis (PTP)

Opposite to the ATP and the pelvis creates a flattened spine and reduced curves.

You lose some of the shock absorbing capability and the entire spine may lose flexibility.

The pelvic angle is reduced in a PTP - where you will see a shallow and sometimes flat angle. Anything less than 20 degrees is significant to determine a PTP.


These two patterns are also influenced by the primary rotational patterns of an LFP or RFP, these are always targeted first to reduce or eliminate the ATP or PTP patterns.

 

Left or Right Forward Pelvis (LFP or RFP)

This covers the other 2 patterns, where one side is tilted forward and the opposite side tilted backward. This creates a rotation or twisting in the spine and is the most common pattern of distortion.

This pattern is also the most common to create disc problems.

The twisting increases pressure on the spine leading to pressure on discs. Remove the twist and you remove the pressure ... and the need for surgery.

 


How To Assess Which Distortion Pattern You Have

There are four main distortion patterns that occur. The easiest way to assess which pattern you have is by testing the flexibility in your muscles. Certain muscles when tight will pull on your pelvis and create the twisting type distortions.

In my studies and work as a licensed chiropractor, I've revealed 3 simple ways to detect these imbalances. Knowing which distortion pattern you have gives you the first step in long lasting back pain relief. Don't worry if it sounds technical or complicated, it's easy as reading a newspaper.

I'll reveal them to you here in this letter.

Remember there are four imbalances; they are centered around the foundation areas of your spine, the pelvis. These imbalances will cause pain anywhere in your spine and are essential to fix if you want lasting relief from pain.

The four imbalances are:

LFP - left forward pelvis, where the pelvis moves forward on the left and backward on the right. This creates a twisting effect through the spine which is why it can cause pain anywhere in the spine.

RFP - right forward pelvis is where the right side moves forward and left back, again creating the spinal distortions.

ATP - this is where the entire pelvis rocks forward and will create what is called a sway back. You can see this with people who have an increased curve of the lower back.

PTP - this is opposite to the ATP where the pelvis rocks backwards and the curves of your spine are almost removed.

I should probably explain I am a 35 years old, Computer consultant, who tries to surf and mountain bike when possible. I had a fall a few years ago (5) and I reckon I knocked my pelvis out of alignment, and twisted my ankle. I have been suffering with, at times, quite severe lower back and neck pain since I damaged it way back in '84.

Ever since then I've relied heavily on osteopaths, physiotherapists and most recently chiropractors.
