This type of activity tightens not only the joints in the area, it also tightens your rib cage and the diaphragm muscle (the muscle you breathe with). As these tighten pain then travels around your rib cage. One of the biggest fears you may be experiencing is, "is it a disc?" The most likely answer is no. Finding the Cause (and Cure) is Simple
Burning or tingling pain in your mid back is usually a minor problem. The sensations you are getting are commonly due to the muscles in the area being too tight. As the muscles tighten they burn or tingle, just like if you were to bend your knees and overwork your thigh muscles - they start to burn as they tire. The reason for this is simple - as the joints in the area fail to move correctly, the muscles have to work harder. With your mid back you also have the rib cage to deal with, which as you can't stop breathing, makes the discomfort worse. Removing this type of pain requires you to get all the joints in your mid back moving better, and the ribs which are the common cause as well. Finding the Cause (and Cure) is Simple
Pain usually means there is more irritation to the nerve, but it may feel severe but it usually isn't. You need to relieve pressure off the nerve as well as eliminate any inflammation in the area. Inflammation occurs to protect the joints in the area, so getting your joints moving will normally remove the inflammation. As the nerve is being irritated, you need to release pressure from the joints and also the ribs in the area. It may sound like you need to seek help from a practitioner, but in fact you can do this at home safely and effectively. Finding the Cause (and Cure) is Simple
There is a difference between "true" numbness and a feeling of numbness. To test this, pinch your skin. If you feel the pinch then you have paraesthesia which is actually the lesser form of nerve irritation, this will settle quickly by removing pressure off the nerve. If you don't feel the pinch, then you have "true" numbness and you should seek help as the irritation to the nerve may actually cause more serious problems in the future. Although it may sound serious most of these conditions heal with conservative treatment approaches. Finding the Cause (and Cure) is Simple When pain occurs that takes your breath away, or you move and there is sudden pain that does the same, do not worry. The rib joints are very small and very sensitive. When you move in certain ways these joints and the muscles around them will tighten quickly. This will catch and take your breath away. Nothing to worry about, it is just the type of mechanism the joint produces. You breathe with your rib cage, so when these joints tighten your breathing irritates them. If they are sensitive then your body will stop you breathing to try to stop and irritation. Your diaphragm (the breathing muscle) may also be tight which will just make the situation worse. Should you be Active or Not?
If your pain is worse with movement then you need to rest. It may sound strange, but you also need to keep moving. Why? Movement helps joints and muscles relax and recover. So you need to find activity that doesn't cause pain. Walking is probably the best thing to do, whereas any twisting movement will make your pain worse. As your mid back pain settles though, you should do some stretches that twist the area to help return the mobility and flexibility you have lost. Should you be Active or Not? Having mid back pain that feels better with movement is good. It means the problem is minor and movement may actually help to rectify the problem. Walking, swimming and stretching are good activities to try that stimulate this area of your back. But the golden rule is - do not overdo it, "pain means no gain". So be gentle but keep active. A good stretch that may help further is to stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Then hold your arms out and turn as far as you can until the mid back feels tight. Hold it there for a second or two, and then turn the opposite direction. Do this for a few minutes and you will find your mobility and flexibility in the mid back will increase. Do You Need Help?
Having your mid back pain build up over a period of time usually means it is nothing serious. Disc irritations for example commonly occur from falls or injuries. Disc irritations in this area are also uncommon. What is occurring is your muscles have weakened over time, as muscles tire they also become tight. This then leads to joints becoming tight and eventually your ribs and joints in the area tighten and distort and mid back pain arrives. Seeing a practitioner may speed up the healing process. You can help your self heal though by using some stretches and joint techniques. This can save you both time and money - let alone pain. Do You Need Help?
