Reflexology for Back Pain

Remember, when you had a friend or spouse massage your feet, and how wonderful it felt. You felt relax and even had more of a skip in you step afterwards. Well, that is reflexology.

Reflexology is an ancient healing science with the principal understanding that there are reflex points on the feet, hands and ears that relate to all organs, glands and parts of the body. By the application of pressure to these reflexes using gentle thumb/finger movements the body's function may be influenced.

What does Reflexology do?

When you build tension in your muscles and joints, the body will cause various points or reflexes in your body to become congested, blocked and tender. It is your body's way of telling you that you are out of balance.

Massaging these reflexes will help to break the blockage down and help to ease the tension the reflex relates to. It is not known how or why this works, but numerous studies have demonstrated its effectiveness.

Where are the reflexes for back pain?

Although traditional a Reflexologist will work on your feet, no one area is better than the other. It is just easier to work on your feet, and as your feet do a lot of work during the day from you walking, massage the points has the added benefits of mobilizing a few joints and easing some foot muscle tension.

If you planning to do this on yourself, the hands are still the easiest to massage. The reflex points for your spine runs down your thumb and across your writs. For lower back pain for example, pressing in on the middle of your wrist will ease tension quickly.

How do you stimulate the reflexes?

Stimulating the reflex is as simple as rubbing on the spot. You can use your finger, thumb or knuckle. Place firm pressure on the point and move in small circles. Do this for 5-10 seconds; it may be painful at times also.

After 10 seconds relax, take a deep breath in and out, relax and repeat on the other hand - always do both hands even if you only have pain on one side. You can do this often in the day to help ease pain. Regular use may be needed depending on the severity or longevity of your pain.

Will Reflexology stop my back pain?

These types of techniques will ease pain, for some they may cause instant relief, but they only deal with the symptomatic nature of your pain. Reflexes will help ease muscle tension and even joint stiffness, but you still should assess your spinal imbalances.
